YOUNG AMERICANS
Who broke out in 2010-2011
4-D-Jamie McBain, 2/25/1988, 6-2, 200, Edina, MN
2010-11 stats: 76 GP, 7-23-30
Impressive numbers for a rookie blueliner. What he has, high end offensive skills and a
big frame, you can't teach. What he needs to get better at, defensive play, you can. Has
shown the ability to put up big minutes, and should see more powerplay time.
Who is ready to break out in 2011-12
21-LW-Drayson Bowman, 3/8/1989, 6-1, 190, Grand Rapids, MI
In 2 seasons at the AHL level, has yet to show the scoring touch that saw him pot 89
goals in his final 2 seasons in the WHL. With the youth movement underway in Raleigh,
he may be running out of time. He either needs to start scoring soon,or develop more
sandpaper in his game for a bottom 6 role.
24-D-Bobby Sanguinetti, 2/29/1988, 6-3, 190, Trenton, NJ
Has elite offensive talent, but the former 1st round pick of the Rangers is running out of
time and falling down the depth chart. He resigned a one-year contract this summer, so
this may be his last shot with the Canes to show some growth in his defensive game.
28-D-Justin Faulk, 3/20/1992, 6-0, 205, South St. Paul, MN
As Minnesota-Duluth won their first ever NCAA Title, it was Faulk who led all of their
defenseman in scoring. Making this even more surprising is that he did it as a
freshman. His talent and work ethic have helped him achieve things quickly, Would not
be surprised to see the 19 year-old playing a big role for the Canes out of the gate.
Youth will be served this season in Raleigh. Zac Dalpe, who was the AHL Checker's best player last
season, is getting a shot in a top 6 role. He could center the 2nd line or play wing on the 1st. Either way,
he is expected to produce. Staal and Skinner give the team 2 dynamic players on top 2 lines, and it may
be a mix and match to fill out the bottom 6. Boychuk and Dwyer are both on the smaller side, so don't be
surprised if Drayson Bowman or Riley Nash takes one of those spots to add grit.
Addition of Kaberle may be a wash with the loss of Corvo.
Kaberle has played, and played well, under coach Paul
Maurice in their Toronto days, so maybe this will get him
back on track. McBain will only get better, and he's been
very good thus far. Again, young here. But there is
upside.
Canes have one of the games best in Ward.
Even when the team in front of him is weak,
he plays well. The hope is adding a quality
NHL backup like Boucher will give ward
more rest during the season.
