YOUNG AMERICANS

Who broke out in 2010-2011
21-C-Derek Stepan, 6-0, 187, R, 6/18/1990, Hastings, MN
2010-2011 stats:  82 GP, 21-24-45
Hard to believe he was only 20 when he made his Rangers debut.  Faceoffs (39%) were
his only downside as he displayed high end offensive skills and steady two-way play.
The addition of Brad Richards will mean he plays against lesser defensive opponents,
and if he can stick on the 2nd line and hold off Anisimov he has the talent to post 25-30
goals and upwards of 60 points.
22-C-Brian Boyle, 6-7, 252, L, 12/18/1984, Hingham, MA
2010-2011 stats:  82 GP, 21-14-35, 74 PIM
After never scoring more than 4 goals in an NHL season, Boyle broke out with 21 last
season, bouncing around from the 4th line to getting time using his 6-7, 252 lb-frame on
the power play.  The Rangers are deep down the middle, and he seems destined to
team with big Mike Rupp on the checking line.  But with his hands and size, he could
earn a top 6 spot should someone get hurt or falter.  Capable of 25-30 goals and over
100 PIMs if given enough time.
27-D-Ryan McDonagh, 6-1, 222, L, 6/13/1989, St. Paul, MN
2010-2011 stats:  40 GP, 1-8-9, +16, 18:44 avg. TOI
The key piece of the Scott gomez trade, McDonagh filled a huge void on the Rangers
blueline last year.  Logged a lot of ice time, showed a touch of nastiness and skates
well.  A solid all around blueliner who will only get better as he gains experience.
Rangers Page
Richards was the gem of this year's free agent class for a reason...  he's a
dynamic offensive player and should make Gaborik deadlier.  Dubinsky
adds grit and two-way acumen to that line and should benefit numbers-wise.
Stepan is a heady player capable of scoring 30 goals and setting up another
30.  I love the addition of Rupp to the 4th line.  He's mean, and has better
hands than you think.  Boyle scored 21 goals, and is also big and physical.
Staal is a top defenseman, but his struggle with a concussion right now
is knocking the overall value of this group way down.  Girardi is very
underrated, McDonagh has a mean streak and is solid all around.  Del
Zotto has elite offensive skills but his defensive zone play keeps landing
him in Tortorella's dog house.  Erixon is the wild card.
Lundqvist is quite simply one of the best in the world.
Biron has starting experience and at this point is the
perfect backup and capable of giving Hank a breather to
keep him ready for the playoffs.
