This team lost Marian Hossa, and no one on the current roster can reasonably be expected to replace his production. Atlanta will most likely be expected to wallow in the bottom of the Southeast this season. If the Thrashers hope to surprise, they will need several youngsters (C Angelo Esposito 19, L, 6-1, 180; C - Riley Holzapfel 20, L, 5-11, 180) to step up into key roles, and for Kari Lehtonen to turn potential into steady production.
PROSPECTS UPDATE 1/13/2008
G - Alex Kangas, 20 yrs. old Univ. of Minnesota (WCHA) (drafted Rd. 5 / Pick 135 in 2006) Freshman has outplayed Junior counterpart in net. Maybe the key for Gophers turning around this disaster of a season rests with Kangas. C - Rylan Kaip, 23 yrs. old North Dakota (WCHA) (Drafted Rd. 9 / pick 269 in 2003) Sioux captain has provided 6 goals, 11points and great leadership. Plays a physical game, will need to bulk up as he'll probably be a checker as a pro. LW - Jordan LaValle, 21 yrs. old Chicago Wolves (AHL) (drafted Rd. 4 / pick 116 in 2005) Has 11 goals and 26 points after 38 games. Has been praised for work ethic, now wears an A on his sweater. RW - Spencer Machacek, 19 yrs. old Vancouver Giants (WHL) Was named captain this year. Has played LW this year. Talented scorer (23-22-45 in 43 games), also plays well in his own zone and has displayed a meannes to his game this season.
