PROSPECTS
G – Jimmy Howard 23, L, 6-0, 220 (US)
Grand Rapids (AHL) 49 GP, 21-21-3, 2.70 GAA, .911 SV%
Viewed as future #1, but at 23, management is running out of time on
that future.  It’s hard to hand a playoff team to a rookie, but he will be an
RFA after next year so it’s time to see if he has what it takes.  Biggest
knock on him is consistency, and if they resign Hasek he’ll get another
year in the AHL to improve on that.
D – Kyle Quincey 21, L, 6-1, 194
Grand Rapids (AHL) 65 GP, 4-18-22, 126 PIM
Has size, plays physical, and shows good offensive instincts.  All he
needs is the consistency that only experience will bring.  At this point,
has played almost twice as many playoff games (13) than regular season
games (7) in the NHL, thanks to the rash of injuries the team suffered in
this year’s playoff run.  He didn’t look out of place in this year’s playoffs.
He should replace Lilja or Lebda by season’s end.
D – Jakub Kindl 20, L, 6-3, 200
Kitchener (OHL) 54 GP, 11-44-55, 142 PIM
Plays a physical game, willing to drop gloves.  Has adjusted well to
North American game, but needs at least one year of development at
the AHL level to clean up his game.
RW – Johan Ryno 21, L, 6-4, 198
Frolunda/Timra (SWE) 39 GP, 5-6-11, 22 PIM
It’s time for him to play in North America.  Tool-wise, he’s a good skater,
uses his size offensively, and rarely looks lost.  Has never played more
than 39 games in a season, though.
LW – Jan Mursak 19, R, 5-11, 167
Saginaw (OHL) 62 GP, 27-53-80, 50 PIM
Is small but extremely gifted offensively.  Needs to add strength before
becoming a regular in the NHL.  Probably a year away.
LW – Justin Abdelkader 20, L, 6-1, 195 (US)
Michigan State (CCHA) 38 GP, 15-18-33, 91 PIM
After playing a key role in the Spartans NCAA championship season, he
could be in the NHL if he continues his progression in the AHL in 2007-
08.  He plays a steady 2-way game and knows how to use his 6-1 frame.
It’s just a matter of when he turns pro at this point.
