YOUNG AMERICANS
Who broke out in 2010-2011
8-C/LW-Justin Abdelkader, 2/25/1987, 6-2, 215, Muskegon, MI
2010-11 stats: 74 GP, 7-12-19, +15
Not all 12 forwards can be offensive superstars, and putting up points will never be
Abdelkader’s calling card. But his size and defensive awareness fit the Red Wings style
and he’s blossomed into an excellent checking forward who can keep opponents off the
board.
Not much change in the forward group. There's a lot of skill and discipline,
and selective grit but not much size among the bottom 6. You have to
wonder if that is playing a role in their playoff failures the past 2 years.
Hudler may lose time to Patrick Eaves, and that wouldn't be a surprise
since Hudler's only listed their because he hasn't cut the mustard in the top
6 role they are counting on him to play.
Lidstrom is still an elite player. Kronwall hits
like a truck and will get more 5-on-5 time with
Rafalski's retrement. Commodore is very
physical and will battle Kindl for the 6th spot.
Ian White will do well on the powerplay.
Howard doesn't get the credit he deserves for producing
with the expectations placed on this team. He's a good
goaltender and has earned his spot. Conklin is the
consummate pro and an ideal, ego-free backup capable
of giving Howard rest. This is a playoff team, but do they
have enough size up front for the Western Conference
